Philosophy

At SkinMedica®, they believe everyone deserves to have naturally radiant skin. That’s why they’ve dedicated years of research to formulating advanced skin care products that rejuvenate skin.

Their entire aesthetic product line is based on the science of the skin’s own healing abilities. As skin ages, elasticity decreases, lines appear and overall appearance is diminished. To counteract the effects of time, their skin care products contain restorative ingredients that work below the skin’s surface to regenerate the health of the skin.

Their scientifically proven recovery compounds include essential ingredients ranging from vitamins C and E to retinol to TNS®, their patented blend of growth factors, soluble collagen, antioxidants and matrix proteins. The impact is clear – fine lines are reduced, age spots and discoloration fade, and skin texture and elasticity is improved. All results of their commitment to creating a lifelong skin care solution for healthier skin.

Heritage

SkinMedica founder, world renowned dermatologist Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick, has been a pioneer and an innovator in the use of lasers in skin rejuvenation and a leader in dermatology for over 30 years. His body of work gained him special recognition by Allure magazine as a beauty industry visionary; one of the “physicians who most influenced beauty”.

Over a decade ago, Dr. Fitzpatrick’s scientific interests in maximizing improvement in topical formulations to reverse photoaging led him to the development of his own unique skin care line and formulation of a new aesthetic and pharmaceutical company, SkinMedica. Based on the excellent results he achieved in his clinical practice and the numerous requests from other physicians for research-based, clinically proven products, he decided to make the SkinMedica skin care system available to all physicians’ patients.

Dr. Fitzpatrick is a progressive leader in Dermatology. After his undergraduate education at Princeton University, he went on to Emory University Medical School where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society for academic excellence.

Dr. Fitzpatrick completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Southern California and attended the University of California at Los Angeles to complete his specialty training in Dermatology.

Board Certified by the American Board of Dermatology and the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, he is a member of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. He served as President of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery in 2000-2001. He is the recipient of the 2004 Leon Goldman Memorial Lectureship Award from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery; the 2005 Ellet H. Drake Lectureship Award from the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS); the recipient of the Richard Webster Lectureship Award from the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery in 2001; and the EnvisiON Award from the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery for life-time achievement. He was the recipient of the 2008 Caroline and William Mark Memorial Award from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. Most recently, he received the 2010 Presidential Citation from the ASLMS for “Master Clinician, Pioneer, Inventor, Teacher, Entrepreneur, Visionary, Friend.”

Dr. Fitzpatrick’s surgical interests led him into the field of laser surgery. He was instrumental in the development of several medical lasers and laser procedures, including laser resurfacing of the skin with the UltraPulse CO2 laser. He is the author of medical textbooks on laser surgery, as well as the author of numerous scientific articles. He lectures all over the world and has trained thousands of physicians in laser techniques.

Dr. Fitzpatrick is currently practicing at Goldman Butterwick Fitzpatrick & Groff Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, in La Jolla, CA. Dr. Fitzpatrick is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Dermatology at University of California-San Diego School of Medicine (Voluntary). He is on the medical staff of Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, CA.

FAQ’s: Skin Care

Q: What skin types would benefit from SkinMedica® skin care products?
A: SkinMedica products are formulated to be used on all skin types and skin conditions, including the most sensitive skin. We recommend you always ask your physician which products and regimen will best address your skin type and concerns.

Q: What is “photo-damage?”
A: Photo-damage to the skin is caused by exposure to harmful ultra-violet light. Photo-damage can be either acute, as in sunburn, or more commonly, chronic, due to gradual changes in the skin caused by an accumulation of sun exposure throughout one’s life. Sun exposure is by far the most influential environmental factor affecting aging of the skin.

Q: What are the causes of wrinkles?
A: Lines and wrinkles are caused by degenerative changes in the proteins of the skin’s infrastructure such as loss of stored antioxidants and reduction in collagen. Wrinkles also are caused by movement of the skin, resulting in creases over time.

Q: What are the causes of age spots?
A: Age spots are also known as sun spots, liver spots (they are unrelated to the liver or liver function), or lentigines. Age spots are associated with cumulative sun exposure. Sun spots mostly appear in areas consistently exposed to sunlight, such as the backs of the hands, the forearms, neck, chest, and face. The pigment producing cells in the skin (melanocytes) are stimulated to produce more pigment when exposed to ultraviolet rays.

Q: What does healthy skin look like?
A: The characteristics of healthy skin are:

  • Skin texture is even, soft and smooth
  • The skin is reasonably firm to the touch
  • The skin has good elasticity
  • No red or dark patches on the skin and the skin color is fairly even
  • Pores are small to medium in size
  • No blemishes
  • In general the skin neither feels too oily nor too dry, and has a sufficient amount of moisture
  • Overall the skin looks vibrant and healthy

Q: How can I maintain healthy skin?
A: Using sun protection and appropriate skin care products containing antioxidants and anti-aging ingredients (such as SkinMedica TNS Recover Complex, Vitamin C Complex and Retinol Complex) is essential in maintaining healthy skin.

Q: How do I find someone to help me with my skin concerns?
A: To find a medical professional to help you with your skin concerns, search the SkinMedica Physician Finder.
